Camera Settings for Northern Lights Pictures

These are the ideal settings which you may preset in your camera before leaving for your Northern lights tour Or you may just sit back, relax and enjoy your Northern Lights Canada tour and we will click your Northern Lights pictures from our own camera.

There are numerous cameras lenses and phones which can click Northern Lights Pictures. Different cameras and lenses give out different quality of the pictures and can capture different colors of Northern Lights. The main thing to remember while clicking Northern Lights Pictures are the camera settings. There may be more settings which you may find through other experienced photographers to click Northern Lights Pictures however we will discuss the basic settings which you will need to click a Northern Lights Picture. 

The first thing to know regarding your camera is that most of the cameras cannot click Northern Lights Pictures in just one click. To click Northern Lights pictures try to follow as many settings as possible from the information available below.

DSLR Camera (Camera with a lense). These settings are also applicable for digital cameras, try to follow as many settings as possible from the information below.

  • Dial Mode – The dial mode on top of your camera – Put it on M (Manual)
  • Lense – The lense on your camera if it has the following options then please follow as below.
  • Stabilizer – The Stabilizer on your lense – Switch it Off
  • Auto Focus | Manual Focus – The AF / MF on your lense – Put it on MF
  • Infinity – Turn your lense to the infinity ∞ sign
  • Settings List – In your camera settings, which you can access from your camera screen try these settings as below.
  • White Balance – Leave it on AWB (Auto White Balance) Or Try “K” Scroll all the way to the right side to find K.
  • ISO – between (1600 – 4000) however you may need to change the ISO depending on, if its a Full Moon night or a New Moon Night
  • Shutter Speed – Try the initial pictures with 8 Seconds Shutter speed and you may increase or decrease your shutter speed depending on the brightness and the movement of the Northern lights
  • Flash – Switch Off the Flash
  • Tripod – To click any kind of Northern Lights a Tripod is must

Phones:

  • IPhone – I Phone recognizes the Northern lights, Just put it in night mode, point & shoot.
  • Android Phones – Goto Photos – Pro mode & Follow these three settings below

ISO – Try Maximum which can be 3200 | Shutter Speed start from 8 Seconds | Focus M (Manual)
